Research in my group aims to understand the large scale atmospheric circulation - the beautiful patterns we see in different fields like wind, temperature, and moisture, and their variations. The processes driving atmospheric variability span a huge range of scales, so understanding cross-scale interactions is central to our research. We use a combination of data analysis and theory, to analyze observations and numerical models. I have a tendency towards understanding how things work at a mechanistic level, using the simpler end of the model hierarchy. General research topics include global circulation regimes, tropospheric and stratospheric circulation, idealized tropical dynamics, waves, shear instabilities, and turbulence in geophysical flows.
